Now, 27 years later, bol is an e‑commerce platform serving 14 million active customers, with 56 million items available and nearly 45,000 selling partners. Then: from online store to platform
In 2011, we took our first steps towards a platform model, then under the name ‘Plaza’. The thinking was clear: to truly serve our customers in a rapidly developing e‑commerce market, we needed to work together. That’s why we launched ‘Sell via bol’: evolving from an online store with our own assortment into a platform with many opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
From 2014 onwards, Belgian partners could also join. And as the number of partners grew quickly, the service and quality customers expected from bol remained most important. To help partners succeed, from 2015 we developed new services to support their business. For example, ‘Logistics via bol’, a service where we handle storage, shipping and customer service on behalf of partners. And ‘Advertising via bol’, enabling partners to increase the visibility of their items. These services aren’t standalone tools; they reinforce one another within one integrated platform.

Because we operate locally, close to customers in the Netherlands and Belgium, we understand habits, expectations and needs. That allows us to respond quickly to shifts in the market, without losing what customers are used to from bol.

How the platform works: each part strengthens the whole
Our platform runs on three interrelated business models. The store is the most visible part: customers come to bol for a relevant and comprehensive assortment. The assortment consists of products offered by partners and items bol itself offers. Together, these two create a broad and dependable selection. In addition, we provide logistics services that allow partners to let bol handle parts of their operations such as storage, shipping and customer service. Behind this sits a large logistics operation that we continually optimise with technology, making processes faster and more precise, from fulfilment centres to transport planning. With advertising, we help partners and brands be seen and help customers find what they’re looking for more quickly, for example through Sponsored Products and Branded Shelves at relevant moments in the customer journey.
Behind the scenes
More than 3,000 employees work across diverse teams to keep everything running and to make the platform better every day. Our quality teams guard the standards of what appears on bol and step in when needed. Technology teams develop systems that make search and recommendations smarter, increase advertising relevance, and make our logistics operation more efficient. Our Partner Service team supports partners with insights, guidance and clear rules, so they can build their businesses within a clear framework. Much of this work remains invisible to customers, but it determines how our platform functions: dependable for customers, transparent and supportive for partners, and resilient to adapt as the market changes.
All the parts of the platform influence each other continuously. When the assortment grows and becomes more relevant, more customers find bol.
