Bollebozen boekenbende

Today, Bollebozen, an initiative of Bol, is launching the Bollebozen Boekenbende: an interactive video series aimed at enhancing the reading enjoyment of children in reception and years 1 and 2 (ages 4–7). Bollebozen’s mission is to make a positive contribution to children’s language development. To this end, Bollebozen is encouraging parents and teachers to watch the Boekenbende series with children, sparking their interest in reading. The first of three episodes is now available on YouTube for children across the Netherlands and Belgium to watch at home or school. Additionally, Bollebozen donates children’s books annually through organisations in the Netherlands and Belgium—this year, the number exceeds 320,000. Before the summer holidays, for instance, 107,000 books will be distributed to primary schools associated with the Youth Education Fund (Jeugdeducatiefonds) in the Netherlands, where at least half of the children live below the poverty line. Another 8,000 books will be donated via the Reading Fund (Leesfonds) in Belgium.

Interactive Storytelling to Spark Reading Interest
The development of the Bollebozen Boekenbende video series was informed by the expertise of primary school teachers. Discussions were held with teachers from various schools to determine what would engage children and how best to ensure information is retained. Consequently, interactive storytelling is at the heart of the episodes. Lieneke van Paassen, a primary school teacher at De Gelderlandschool, explains: “When children are actively involved in the reading process and are encouraged to think about the story, they enjoy reading more, which in turn fosters an interest in reading. Ultimately, this has a positive effect on reading proficiency and language development.” Based on teacher input, the videos have been designed to be accessible to all students, with auditory and visual support ensuring that the story is easily understood.

Episode 1: Anansi the Spider and the Eggs for the King
Each episode highlights a children’s book and features an imaginative set, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the world of the story. The first episode of the Bollebozen Boekenbende revolves around the book Anansi de Spin en de eieren voor de koning (Anansi the Spider and the Eggs for the King) by author Iven Cudogham. In this episode, Iven takes children on an interactive journey through his story. “We’ve got a big problem,” Iven announces in the episode. “Books are falling from the sky, and if you look closely, you’ll see the letters are jumbled up! Luckily, children from schools in the Netherlands and Belgium are here to lend a hand and help put Anansi the Spider back together.” In addition to presenting the episode, Iven also contributed to its development. “I’m passionate about creatively contributing to children’s language development. For me, it all starts with having fun and showing that the stories you read are a thrilling adventure. That’s the perspective I brought to the creation of this episode.”

Collaboration Between the Youth Education Fund and Bollebozen
Last year, the Youth Education Fund and Bollebozen distributed Boekiebags to help maintain children’s reading levels during the summer months. By making the Bollebozen Boekenbende videos available to all 464 affiliated schools—and all children outside of these schools across the Netherlands and Belgium—the creators hope to reach even more children. Hente van de Boom, programme manager at Bollebozen, states: “With the Bollebozen Boekenbende, we aim to spark a love of reading from an early age. This helps combat language deficiencies, enabling children to perform better and increasing their chances of achieving their dream job in the future.”

The second episode of the Bollebozen Boekenbende will be released during Children’s Book Week in October, with the third episode following around the Christmas holidays.
